[ARCHIVED] Hunter Bay Portable Toilet Removed Amidst Vandalism

Public Works

SAN JUAN COUNTY, WA. September 22, 2025 – San Juan County’s Public Works Department maintains portable restroom facilities at some of our public shore access locations around the islands. Over the past few months, several facilities have been repeatedly abused and vandalized – including the Hunter Bay toilet on Lopez Island. Due to the unsustainable upkeep of managing the repeatedly abused facility, Public Works will be removing it from use, effective Wednesday, September 24.

Crews repeatedly found trash in the septic holding tank, creating difficulties with maintenance and pumping. Consequently, the toilet will no longer be available for public use. Other County-managed facilities may also be removed if they continue to be vandalized with garbage or other materials. Hunter Bay Toilet

Public Works staff ask that the public treat these facilities with care and consideration, as they are an amenity shared by all.
